AVATAR, APPEARANCE & INVENTORY

What is an AVATAR?

  • Clothing and hair in Second Life comes from Appearance and from prims
  • Clothing and hair can be created, you can get freebie clothing and hair and they can be purchased in world.
  • Some skins are in the library, you can get more as freebies and can be custom created or purchased in world
  • Tattoos can be purchased or custom created.
Carefully watch the following video tuTORials and practice modifying your avatar in APPEARANCE

How to Change Your Appearance - video tutorial: This video tutorial discusses how to change the appearance of your avatar using the standard appearance-editing tools.

Customizing Your Avatar Video Tutorial : Ditto to the above description..

Some things to practice from the How to Use APPEARANCE video tuTORials:

How Clothes are Made in Second Life: The Basics

  • If you mess up while in APPEARANCE just hit the CLOSE button and do not save.
  • Practice re-tinting clothes (you can only do this if your clothing item can be modified)
  • Keep in mind that many items of clothing, hair an accessories are not created in APPEARANCE, they are prim attachments.
  • If you open your INVENTORY and type (WORN you will immediately see all items you avatar is currently wearing.
  • YOU can right click on a file and select either WEAR or DETACH., you can right click on an attachment on your avatar and select DETACH to remove it, or EDIT>TAKE OFF CLOTHING.
  • Body parts cannot be detached but can easily be switched if you double click on another SHAPE or SKIN.
  • Practice changing a TEXTURE in APPEARANCE. You have built in TEXTURES in your LIBRARY.
  • The LIBRARY folder is available to everyone on SECOND LIFE. If you open your LIBRARY folder you will see a folder marked TEXTURES.

Review all video tutorials above once as stand-alone videos. Then log in to Second Life and practice walking, flying, teleporting, camera controls, and play with the APPEARANCE functions and also review how your inventory is organized. It's a very good practice to start the video - then stop it and try to replicate the things you saw on the video in Second Life - then click back to the video - review the information and switch back to Second Life and try to reinforce what you see on the video by actually practicing it in Second Life.

The video tutorial below will demonstrate how you use the poseballs to pose your avatar and take a Snapshot to Disk image which you then open in Photoshop [ in the second video tutorial] to prepare your first avatar presentation. An example of a completed first avatar presentation is below.

Follow the directions in the tutorial below and try to make your first avatar pose image.
